Raised Bed Rebellion

What if we have everything we need? How does a garden begin? Past the first dream of ripe and gnarly heirloom tomatoes, and after finding the perfect space in whatever land we are lucky enough to be able to alter, how do we start our garden beds? One of the Read more…

Matt’s Path to Permaculture

My journey to Permaculture began in a community garden in 2011 in Carrboro, North Carolina. Like most people I knew, I didn’t know how to grow vegetables. I couldn’t identify one tree from another. I remember being asked to mulch a path and having to admit I didn’t know what Read more…

Trees are Sanctuaries

“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life… When we are stricken and cannot bear our lives any longer, then Read more…

No script, no master plan

Imagine you wanted to help a relationship with someone and so you visited a therapist together. You both tell the therapist your problems and pay them a lot of money. Everyone goes home, and in a week you meet up again. Smiling, the therapist hands you each a script with Read more…

Skip the Compost Pile?

Compost is the miraculous formed in worm guts; a homebrew resurrection where weeds, rinds, peels, junk mail, old love letters, failed food experiments and delicious leftovers alike find themselves heaped together to surrender their past and be reborn.  Compost piles are a kind of devotional poetry and a shrine to Read more…

In times of way too much internet and not enough soil, we choose to respect your attention. Learn what this means to us.

made by people, not AI

We don't use AI in our Permaculture Designs. Wondering why? Watch our video on Permaculture and AI.

Permaculture is deeply indebted to the rooted generational wisdom of the indigenous peoples of the lands where we work, live, and heal. We grow gratefully in the shade of the seed breeders, the land tenders, the song and story keepers, and all those who knew how to be harmony to the great music of earth.

We remember that great areas of the land we tend were already tended with work and wisdom for thousands of years. The presence of the wild food and medicine plants we benefit from were encouraged by the practices and presence of the ancestral peoples of these lands.

If you are inspired to support our local indigenous peoples, please consider giving to the Occaneechi Saponi, the Haliwa Saponi, the Tutelo Saponi, the Cherokee, the Lumbee, and the other indigenous wisdom keepers of this land that feeds and shelters us.
