SUMMARY:Permaculture Roots 4 - Planting a Food Forest!
DESCRIPTION:Hillsborough\, NC \n\n\n\nFor information on the whole Permaculture Roots workshop series\, please see this page. \n\n\n\nWe are grateful to be putting on this workshop in collaboration with Living Arts Collective and in the lovingly tended space of Jubilee Healing Farm. \n\n\n\nEach workshop in this series will include opportunities to connect with nature and our senses\, learn Permaculture design\, answer your questions\, and meet other amazing humans interested in Permaculture. \n\n\n\nThis Workshop:\n\n\n\nFor our fourth workshop in 2025\, we’re planting the Food Forest we started designing in May! \n\n\n\nWe’ll review the Food Forest design\, talk more about the plants we’re going to plant while they’re there\, and get good hands-on experience creating a real Food Forest that will grow and thrive for generations. \n\n\n\nAlthough we’ll have a design\, we’ll still leave room for inspiration to change it! We’ll invite participants to keep their senses open as they work and listen for ways to make the Food Forest evolve past the design into something fully alive. Bring your creativity and sense of beauty (as well as your willingness to help dig a hole or two). \n\n\n\nYou don’t have to have attended any of our other workshops to participate in this one. \n\n\n\nThis workshop has a lower cost to attend because there will be a lot of hands-on time and participants will be helping the installation to happen. \n\n\n\nMain Topics:\n\n\n\n\nFood Forest Review / Questions\n\n\n\nHands-On Food Forest Learning!\n\n\n\nInstalling the Food Forest From Pattern to Detail\n\n\n\nUsing Some Favorite Hand Tools\n\n\n\nPlanting Trees (…the Easy Way That Works)\n\n\n\nInstalling Tree “Guilds”\n\n\n\nMaking a Plan to Work with the Food Forest\n\n\n\nAnswering Any Other Permaculture Questions\n\n\n\n\nVenue and Workshop Details:\n\n\n\nThis 5-part series is held at Jubilee Healing Farm – a beautifully tended small farm located on 10 acres in Hillsborough\, NC that supports volunteer and community-building activities and workshops for people seeking healing. \n\n\n\nWe’ll have the workshop part inside and part outside unless the weather disagrees!  Please wear comfortable clothing for the day. If it’s going to rain a little\, bring rain gear. A little rain is very helpful for Permaculture design! \n\n\n\n If you’re concerned about ticks or other itchy expressions of the local ecology\, please bring non-toxic insect deterrent. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\n\n\n\nJournal and pen – while digital is OK\, we strongly suggest using paper!\n\n\n\nYour own lunch and any snacks you need (kitchen available to heat up food)\n\n\n\nWater bottle\n\n\n\n\nAlso: \n\n\n\n\nOpenness to different ways of seeing and living\n\n\n\nKindness towards the plants\, animals\, soil\, water\, and other people here\n\n\n\nInclusivity and welcoming spirit towards the people in the workshop\n\n\n\nWillingness to put your phones away and tune into your senses\n\n\n\nCuriosity about life and what each other and the land has to say\n\n\n\n\nSign-Up\n\n\n\nWe offer our tickets at a rate that allows us to continue doing this work. Thank you for supporting it. \n\n\n\n If you have any questions\, please reach out to workshops@silverbranchpermaculture.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatthew “Watersong” Tracy started practicing Permaculture in 2011 and received his design certificate from Wild Abundance in 2015. He has been consulting and teaching as a Permaculture Designer since 2018. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, he learned from numerous Permaculture teachers\, tended land with minimal inputs\, worked with around 50 clients on their land\, lived off-grid for nearly a decade\, and made (… and still makes!) a whole lot of humbling and valuable mistakes on his way back to life in harmony with the earth.  \n\n\n\nWith all that experience\, Matt is ever a beginner and student of the land. Nature is infinite. What can we do but listen and try? \n\n\n\nMatt is honored to be a Permaculture guide to anyone interested in coming a little closer to the earth. Becoming a father in 2023 has made passing down these teachings that always consider future generations more important than ever. \n\n\n\nRead the rest of Matt’s bio here.

SUMMARY:Permaculture Roots 3 - Living Closer to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Hillsborough\, NC \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor information on the whole Permaculture Roots workshop series\, please see this page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNew: we’re excited to announce that we’ll also be including a special guest teacher for this workshop only: Jim Sahadi\, who brings a decade of experience in designing and building small\, smart\, ecological\, and affordable homes! \n\n\n\nJim has navigated the entire process from visioning\, to designing\, to permitting and building. We are grateful he’ll be sharing his invaluable experience in this workshop! See Jim’s bio below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Workshop:\n\n\n\nHome is the center of our lives. In Permaculture\, it’s the heart of the design. Our love and our care extends outwards from our home. \n\n\n\nModern homes offer comfort and convenience that we pay for in triple: with the severe financial costs of rent\, mortgage\, maintenance\, and utilities\, all of which seem to be increasing yearly; with the accumulation of so much stuff and so much space to clean; and most of all\, with our disconnection from nature: the rhythms of the day and the season\, the peace of night\, the breath of a cross-breeze\, the dawn of birdsong. \n\n\n\nMost modern homes are tremendously wasteful of energy. They aren’t built to last and the materials that make them up end up in landfills. \n\n\n\nFrom the beginning\, Permaculture has taught ways to build earth and climate-wise homes and to harvest our own energy and water from what the land gives. It’s more than possible: after all\, most people on earth still live this way – and somewhere in our bones\, we remember the beauty of it. \n\n\n\nOur third workshop in this series teaches accessible and deep ways to live more simply. \n\n\n\nWe help you sort through the complexity of options for affordable\, simple shelters\, what to know about going off-grid fully or in part\, and a lot of what Matt wishes he knew when he decided to move to land with no buildings and not much money in the woods almost 10 years ago! \n\n\n\nYou don’t have to have attended any of our other workshops to participate in this one. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMain topics: \n\n\n\n\nMain Things to Know When You Move to Live On Land\n\n\n\nThe Pleasures and Perils of Tiny Living and Going Off-Grid\n\n\n\nAffordable\, Ecological Shelter Options in 2025\n\n\n\nFun Off-Grid Things – Outdoor Kitchens\, Rocket Stoves\, and So On!\n\n\n\nLiving Well on Small-Scale Solar\n\n\n\nPermitting\, Loans\, and Other Uncomfortable Stuff\n\n\n\nCatching Water and Living in the “Rain Budget”\n\n\n\nDesigning for Wildfire and Heavy Rain\n\n\n\nAnswering Your Land Buying / Home / Off-Grid Questions\n\n\n\n\nVenue and Workshop Details:\n\n\n\nThis 5-part series is held at Jubilee Healing Farm – a beautifully tended small farm located on 10 acres in Hillsborough\, NC that supports volunteer and community-building activities and workshops for people seeking healing. \n\n\n\nWe’ll have the workshop part inside and part outside unless the weather disagrees!  Please wear comfortable clothing for the day. If it’s going to rain a little\, bring rain gear. A little rain is very helpful for Permaculture design! \n\n\n\nWe’ll likely do a little forest walking.  Good to wear compatible footwear.  If you’re concerned about ticks or other itchy expressions of the local ecology\, please bring non-toxic insect deterrent. \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\n\n\n\nJournal and pen – while digital is OK\, we strongly suggest using paper!\n\n\n\nYour own lunch and any snacks you need (kitchen available to heat up food)\n\n\n\nWater bottle\n\n\n\n\nAlso: \n\n\n\n\nOpenness to new (and ancient) ways of seeing and living\n\n\n\nKindness towards the plants\, animals\, soil\, water\, and other people here\n\n\n\nInclusivity and welcoming spirit towards the people in the workshop\n\n\n\nWillingness to put your phones away and tune into your senses\n\n\n\nCuriosity about life and what each other and the land has to say\n\n\n\n\nSign-Up\n\n\n\nWe offer our tickets at a rate that allows us to continue doing this work. Thank you for supporting it. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to workshops@silverbranchpermaculture.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop Teachers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatthew “Watersong” Tracy started practicing Permaculture in 2011 and received his design certificate from Wild Abundance in 2015. He has been consulting and teaching as a Permaculture Designer since 2018. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, he learned from numerous Permaculture teachers\, tended land with minimal inputs\, worked with 50+ clients on their lands\, lived off-grid for nearly a decade\, and made (… and still makes!) a whole lot of humbling and valuable mistakes on his way back to life in harmony with the earth. \n\n\n\nGuest Teacher\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJim Sahadi worked for many years as Mechanical Engineer but in 2014 decided to heed the inner guidance and reconfigure his life so that his work was much more aligned with his passions and interests and with what he feels the world needs. \n\n\n\nSince 2014 he’s been designing and building affordable\, high quality\, right-sized dwellings that usually incorporate alternative “systems” for potable water\, electricity\, grey and blackwater disposal\, heating and cooling\, etc. \n\n\n\nJim also advocates for living a right-sized life\, building local community and resources\, and exploring what living a simple life really means. He’s currently 2 chapters into writing a book on life strategies for happiness\, fulfillment\, and satisfaction in this land of oversized appetites and natural resource depletion (actual title TBD).

SUMMARY:Permaculture Roots 2 - Food Forest Design
DESCRIPTION:Chapel Hill\, NC (first half of day) and Hillsborough\, NC (second half of day) \n\n\n\nFor information on the whole Permaculture Roots workshop series\, please see this page. \n\n\n\nThis Workshop:\n\n\n\nOur second workshop on June 21 is focused on designing a Food Forest! \n\n\n\nFirst\, we’ll begin by touring Liane Salgado’s 15-year old Food Forest / Forest Garden in Chapel Hill\, NC. This is the most abundant and mature example of a food forest I know of in the entire Piedmont! This workshop gives a rare opportunity to learn from an established\, local food forest. \n\n\n\nOne small part of Liane’s Chapel Hill Food Forest. It’s hard for photos to do a food forest justice. Just about every plant you see here provides food (as well as medicine\, habitat\, mulch\, soil building\, and so on…!). Fifteen years after Liane began\, the Food Forest is a place for life beyond compare.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThen\, in the second half of the workshop\, we’ll apply what we learned to co-design a Food Forest for Jubilee Healing Farm in Hillsborough\, NC which will be planted this Fall! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMain topics:\n\n\n\n\nTouring a Successful Food Forest\n\n\n\nAll About Food Forests / Forest Gardens\n\n\n\nApplying Permaculture Design Techniques\n\n\n\nWeaving Beauty and Places for Life\n\n\n\nLaying Out a Food Forest Design From Pattern to Detail\n\n\n\nSelecting the Right Plants\n\n\n\nSome Favorite Edible Trees and Shrubs!\n\n\n\n50+ Food Forest Plant List\n\n\n\nYour Food Forest / Forest Garden Questions\n\n\n\n\n… and in October\, we’ll have a workshop on the same site where we’ll install the Food Forest! \n\n\n\nVenue and Workshop Details:\n\n\n\nThe first half of this workshop will be held in a 2-acre mature Food Forest in Chapel Hill. DESCRIPTION:Far more than a system of gardening\, Permaculture teaches a way to harmoniously integrate people and ecology in a way that regenerates both.  This new and ancient art has never been more needed than it is today.\n\nThis day-long Permaculture course is an excellent place to begin\, as well as a good deep dive for anyone who has practiced some permaculture and wants to immerse themselves into the principles and patterns at the root of this movement.\n\nWe’ll explore the immensely helpful permaculture design principles and then bring it into more application by looking at some design patterns that emerge from applying these principles – especially those that work well in the sultry Southeast.  We’ll dive into some favorite permaculture plants for this bioregion and their many uses\, including our beautiful local trees.  We’ll also make sure and get some hands on experiences in the mix and help everyone stay connected after the workshop so you can get help for your land projects and the support of a community.\n\nClass will be held in a location to be announced within 40 minutes of Durham and Chapel Hill.\n\nA delicious off-grid vegan lunch will be provided.\n\nMatt and Liane will be teaching this workshop together\, so don’t miss it!\n\nParticipation in this beginner-level class will give a discount on future Permaculture Design Certificate courses we teach.
